You can read the thoughts of a creature. You can target any 1 creature that you can see within 30'. The target has an Int of 3 or lower or doesn't speak a language, the creature is unaffected.
You initially learn the surface thoughts of the target. As an action, you can either switch targets or attempt to probe deeper. If you probe deeper, the target gets a Wis saving throw. If it fails, you gain insight into something that looms large in its mind. If it succeeds, the spell ends. The target knows of the invasion, and unless you shift to another target, it can use its next action to make an Int check (vs your Int check); if it succeeds, the spell ends. Questions verbally directed at the target naturally shape its thoughts, so this spell is effective in interrogation.
You can also use this spell to detect the presence of thinking creatures you can't see, within 30' of you. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 2' of rock, 2" of any metal other than lead, or a thin sheet of lead blocks you. You can't detect a creature with an Int of 3 or lower or one that doesn't speak a language.
